Fence Types
Most fences have either a continuous sheet of fencing (such as woven wire) or three to six
rails, pipes, or wires, the bottom element being at least 1 foot from the ground. Any closer
and a horse is more likely to get a leg caught between the fence and the ground when lying
next to the fence. Continuous fencing can be stretched with a fence stretcher, a come-along,
a truck, or a tractor. Fencing material should usually be put on the inside of the pen—that
is, toward the horses—to prevent horses from contacting the posts or pushing the fencing
off. The temptation is to put the railing on the outside of the posts for aesthetics, but with
most fencing it is less secure that way.
Wood fence has a traditional look, and if well maintained is safe and attractive.
