11 Fencing
G ood fencing serves many purposes. Fences keep horses separated and in a particular place,
away from the residence, lawns, crops, vehicles, buildings, and roads. Fences maintain
boundaries and property lines and thus promote good relationships between neighbors. Good
fencing is designed to keep horses from getting hurt. And attractive fencing can set off acre-
age and add to the value of the property. Fences decrease liability because they lessen the
chance of a horse doing damage to others' property or getting on the road and causing an ac-
cident, and fences keep people (especially children) and animals (especially dogs and other
horses) off the property.
When it comes time to choose fencing, get ready to do some research and comparison. In
the last 10 years, a great many new types of fencing for horses have been developed that in-
crease safety, enhance appearance, and minimize maintenance. But it is important to choose
the fencing that fits your situation and budget. It is likely that no single type of fence will be
