Roof overhangs can provide added protection for turnout pens. During this record
snowfall, however, the snow that slid off the roof blocked Zipper's access to his pen
until we fired up the tractor.
Fiber cement roofing products are made to look like shingles, slate, and shakes. Products
manufactured before 1990 contained asbestos fibers, which make them very durable. Since
then, cellulose fibers have replaced asbestos.
Asphalt roofing, both shingles and rolled roofing, will last 20 years if properly installed.
It is relatively inexpensive, comes in a range of colors, is one of the least complicated types
of roofing to install, and is quieter than steel roofing. It is more susceptible to damage by
wind, cold, ice buildup, and extreme heat than is steel roofing.
Felt roofing paper is useful as an underlayer but not as an exterior roofing; it simply will
not last.
