In-Depth Information
If the soil is too soft, loose, or weak, and its bearing capacity is inadequate for the foot-
ings (deepest support structures), the design engineer of the barn will have to make ad-
justments in the location or depth of the footings, or in the size of the concrete forms for
the footings. The barn should have a strong foundation made of poured concrete, concrete
block, or pressure-treated wood.
There should be plenty of windows or doors to let in the sun and air but keep out the cold
wind, rain, and snow. A temperature range of 30 to 80°F is best for horses, with 55°F being
the ideal. A humidity of 35 to 60 percent is good, with 60 percent optimum; however, it
is better to be a little too dry than damp. Horses need adequate ventilation but cannot take
cold, damp drafts.
