Locating Major Buildings
When locating major buildings, consider the following factors.
For most climates, plan for maximum sun and shelter in the winter and maximum shade
and breeze in the summer. Check with the local weather authority to find out what the pre-
vailing winds are during the various seasons. Go to the site itself during each season, es-
pecially winter, to determine which way the buildings should face. In the United States,
prevailing winds usually come from the north, west, or northwest, so most farm buildings
face the south or southeast. But local winds can be very different. You may live in an area
that receives upslope storms and winds and receive more of your “weather” from the east.
Or if you live along the coast, your weather might move from the coast directly inland. So
do plenty of research before you orient your buildings.
