Buying an established farm
An existing farm may or may not be suitable for horses. To find out:
• Make a list of question to ask the seller.
• Hire a building inspector to evaluate the condition of the buildings, noting
whether or not they are up to code.
• If the buildings aren't up to code, get an estimate from a builder for cost of
renovations.
• Check to be sure all improvements comply with zoning and electrical, plumb-
ing, and building codes.
• Hire an equine expert to walk through the property with you, noting the advant-
ages and disadvantages.
• Test the water for quality and bacterial contamination.
• Take notes and bring this topic with you so it will be handy for reference.
