Topography
Note which way the slopes face and what kind of natural or man-made structures may
block the sun, be a natural windbreak, or affect drainage. In temperate climates, north-fa-
cing slopes or areas obstructed from light may mean increased heating costs, icy driveways
and barnyards, increased wind chill and snow drifting, and a “later morning” in the winter.
But the same sun-blocking features may be advantageous in reducing heat on a warm-cli-
mate acreage.
The area you are researching may be noted for cold winter winds, but rocks, trees, and
terrain can substantially block the wind and provide pockets of shelter. Conversely, if you
