Winter turnout blanket. When a horse spends a lot of time out in winter weather, either
you can let him grow a long winter coat or you can provide him with a winter turnout
blanket. He will still grow a winter coat, but it won't be as thick and it will stay cleaner
when blanketed.
Winter turnout blankets range from waxed cotton duck with wool lining (New Zealand
Rug) to puffy, quilted ski jacket-type blankets. Generally, a turnout blanket has two sur-
cingles (bellybands), front chest straps, hind leg straps, and possibly a tail strap and/or tail
flap. Some have neck extensions that reach as far as the ears.
No matter what type you choose, the blanket must be waterproof and breathable to allow
a horse to vent excess body heat and moisture from exercise or sudden environmental tem-
