TURNOUT CLOTHING
Sheets and blankets for turnout should be well fitted, waterproof, and breathable. They
need to be tough enough to resist rolling and chewing by pasture mates and be outfitted
with safe straps that won't entangle a horse when he rolls.
Fly sheet.
A fly sheet designed for turnout must be tough and should provide UV pro-
tection. There are several types; the most popular is the PVC-coated mesh fabric sheet. Be-
cause horses in summer turnout are active, the sheets must fit well and are often outfitted
with elastic leg straps to keep them in position without the leg straps breaking.
Fly mask.
Fly masks made of various types of mesh are available to cover eyes, ears,
and the muzzle. It is important to choose eye masks of good design so that the mask does
not irritate the horse's eyes or cause hair loss on his lower jaw from rubbing.
