diaphragm, an ion-exchange membrane should
be used instead of the diaphragm. In this case, a
separable cell in which the membrane is
sandwiched between the compartments using
screws is recommended. Such separable divided
cells are commercially available. When a
diaphragm is used, the cell resistance usually
increases and consequently the cell voltage (the
voltage between the anode and cathode)
increases. To decrease the cell voltage, the
distance between the electrodes should be kept
as small as possible.
