5.7.4 Electrochemical Fluorination of
Sulfides
Fuchigami and co-workers found that anodic
fluorination of sulfides having
α-electron-withdrawing groups proceeded quite
well to provide the corresponding α-fluorinated
products in good yields, as shown in Eq. 5.25
[72,76]. The fluorination proceeds by way of a
Pummerer-type mechanism via the
fluorosulfonium cation ( A ), as shown in Eq.
5.26 [77,78]. Thus, when R is an
electron-withdrawing group, the deprotonation
of A is significantly facilitated, and
consequently
the
fluorination
proceeds
efficiently.
