In-Depth Information
decades in understanding the past history of
faulting on many of the major faults near
population centers. We now know much more
about the timing, displacement, and rupture
length of many prehistoric earthquakes. As
more faults that rupture the surface are
studied, as new techniques are developed
forĀ  investigating buried faults, and as
interdisciplinary studies integrate increasingly
diverse data, our knowledge will continue to
expand, providing constraints for engineers
and city planners and for the broader geological
community that is just trying to understand
how the Earth works.
