Dining Tips
English menus are a given in coastal resorts, but not necessarily elsewhere. That said,
there is nearly always a waiter who can translate. It's handy to learn a few words of Mal-
lorquin, though, so you can decipher some menu items for yourself. Bottled mineral wa-
ter
(aigua mineral)
is the norm; order it either with
(amb)
or without
(sense)
gas.
If you're extended the honour of being invited to dine in someone's home, bring a
small gift of wine or chocolates and prepare yourself for a feast. A Mallorquin host will
go all out to entertain guests. Family lunches are often big, boisterous affairs - you'll
barely get a word in edgeways but have fun trying! Say '
bon profit
' (enjoy your meal)
before eating and '
salut
!' (cheers) when drinking a toast.
The one who invites usually foots the bill. Service charge is included, but you might
want to reward good service with an additional tip of around 5%.
