January
Winter wraps the island in a blanket of calm, with some mild, some chilly
days. Beach resorts are still in hibernation, with many hotels and restaur-
ants closed; Palma is a notable exception.
Three Kings
The tres reis (three kings) rock up on 5 January, the eve of Epiphany, bearing gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh. They are the stars of a flamboyant parade in Palma.
Festes de Sant Antoni Abat
The Festes de Sant Antoni Abat (16 and 17 January) are celebrated with concerts, pran-
cing demons, huge pyres and fireworks, and parading farm animals get a blessing. It's cel-
ebrated with particular gusto in Sa Pobla and Artà.
Sant Sebastià
Palma pulls out the party stops on the eve of the feast day of its patron saint (20 January),
with live music, fireworks and revelry in city squares.
