In-Depth Information
Glasswork
Glasswork was first produced on the island way back in the 2nd century BC and its artis-
ans were part of a network of glass production and trade with its centre on Murano, in
Venice. Mallorcan glass manufacturing reached its high point in the 18th century, where-
after the industry fell into decline. But one family, the Gordiolas who first entered the in-
dustry back in the 18th century, were almost single-handedly responsible for glassmak-
ing's revival in the mid- to late 20th century. Although you'll find smaller artisans work-
ing with glass, the Museu de Gordiola near Algaida is the largest producer and here you
can watch traditional glass-blowing techniques.
Leatherwork
Thanks to its world-famous shoe manufacturers like Camper, Mallorca's leather-making
industries have become renowned worldwide for their quality. Although smaller tradi-
tional manufacturers tend to get drowned out by the larger companies, there's no denying
that this industry has become a stunning Mallorcan success story. Inca is the capital of
Mallorcan shoe-making with a host of factories and outlets; the latter are open to the
public.
Well aware of its pulling power, the industry has produced two useful brochures which
you may find in some tourist offices around the island: Mallorca Mapa TurĂstico - Ruta
de Calzado (Mallorca Tourist Map - Shoe Route) and Industry Tour of Majorcan Foot-
wear - Guide to Footwear Manufacturers .
