In-Depth Information
The seat of the Balearic Islands Parliament is located in the Círculo Mallorquin, a
high-society club on Carrer del Conquistador that local Modernista architect Miquel
Madorell i Rius (1869-1936) renovated in 1913.
Sóller
Provincial Sóller can't rival Palma for the breadth of its Modernista buildings, but it does
have some outstanding examples of the genre. Most of it is attributable to Joan Rubió, an
acolyte of Antoni Gaudí, and the most eye-catching example is his unusual early-20th-
century Modernist facade grafted onto the 18th-century Església de Sant Bartomeu. The
adjacent and extravagant Banco de Sóller is a typically bold example of his approach.
Nearby, the Ca'n Prunera - Museu Modernista sports a typically delicate stone facade
with muted wrought ironwork; it's also unusual in Mallorca in that it allows you to step
beyond the Modernist facade and see the genre's influence upon early-20th-century in-
teriors.
