19 July 1936
The army and right-wing militias take control of Mallorca for General Franco as he launches his
military uprising against the Republican government in Madrid.
1 April 1939
Franco claims victory in a nationally televised radio speech, three days after Madrid had fallen
to Nationalist troops and bringing to an end almost three years of conflict.
1952
After almost 12 years, post-Civil War rationing finally ends on the island. Although many Mallor-
quins continue to live subsistence lives, the tourism boom will soon transform the island
forever.
1960
An estimated 500,000 tourists visit the island, marking the beginning of mass tourism on the
island. These figures would increase 50 times over during the decades that followed.
1983
The autonomy statute for the Balearic Islands region (together with those of other Spanish re-
gions) is approved eight years after Franco's death.
May 2007
Mallorcan Socialist Francesc Antich ends right-wing Partido Popular (PP) rule after regional
elections by forming a coalition government with promises to put a brake on construction pro-
jects.
2009
The Basque separatist group ETA detonates a series of bombs, killing two policemen and caus-
ing havoc at the height of Mallorca's July and August summer tourist seasons.
May 2011
The conservative Partido Popular storms back into power, winning an absolute majority in re-
gional elections. The kingmakers in 2007, the UniĆ³ Mallorquina, loses all its seats.
June 2011
The Serra de Tramuntana is inscribed as a Cultural Landscape on the Unesco World Heritage
List.
