ing to Álvaro Gijón, deputy mayor of Palma, booze tourism is on its last legs; in July
2013 the Independent quoted him as saying: 'People vomiting and heeding calls of
nature in public is not on.'
Winter tourism is another big focus, with more hotels opening earlier and closing later
every year to cater for growing numbers of hikers, cyclists and birdwatchers - precisely
the kind of holidaymaker the island is so keen to attract. And it is working: more and
more operators are adding outdoor- focused holidays to their portfolio. Magaluf still casts
the occasional shadow, but the horizons are looking bright. And while the party is far
from over, future visitors will have to behave themselves and keep the noise down.
