Where to Stay
Mallorca's not all about anonymous megaresorts. Plan ahead and you can snag a room
with a designer edge or a retreat that will give you a taste of the island long before the
dawn of the package holiday. Up and down the coast you'll find charismatic lodgings,
from back-to-nature fincas (farm-stays) resting in olive groves to town mansions with
boutique credentials and hilltop monasteries with stirring views over mountains and sea.
Choosing where to stay is much more than finding a bed for the night.
Ultimately the decision is a matter of taste: the west is great for coastal drama, hill
towns and hiking; the hinterland for rural relaxation; the east and south for their fine sandy
beaches, ideal for families; the north for a dash of everything. If culture, food and shop-
ping are high on your list, Palma is perfect - and you can easily day-trip to great beaches
nearby.
Advance booking is always a good idea, especially in high season (May to September)
when beds are like gold dust. Increasingly, Palma is becoming a weekend short-break des-
tination, which means that even in low season it can be an idea to at least call ahead.
Prices can skyrocket in high season (doubling, sometimes even tripling), while there are
usually cracking deals to be had out of season.
From November to Easter, the vast majority of hotels close in coastal resorts. Palma is a
year-round option, and you'll also find a sprinkling of places open in towns like Pollença
and Sóller.
