In any poll of the prettiest villages in the Balearics, Valldemossa (

) is sure to make the grade. Draped around the eastern foothills of
the Serra de Tramuntana, the village has the usual cobblestone lanes, flower-
pots and pretty church. But Valldemossa is given added cachet by having its very
own saint and a former royal monastery which once housed Frédéric Chopin and
George Sand; their stay bequeathed to the town one of Mallorca's most uplifting
music festivals, Festival Chopin.
