Casa-Museu Llorenç Villalonga MUSEUM
( www.fundaciocasamuseu.cat ; Carrer de Bonaire 25; 10am-2pm Mon-Fri plus 4-8pm Tue, 5-8pm
Sat) From the mid-18th to the early 19th century, Binissalem's prosperity as a
wine-making town was reflected in the construction of several notable mansions. One
that has been well preserved is Can Sabater, a country residence for the writer Llorenç
Villalonga and now the Casa-Museu Llorenç Villalonga. Inside, note the 18th-century
wine vats and room set aside for the crushing of grapes underfoot. Summer concerts are
held in the garden.
Ca'n Novell WINERY
( 971 51 13 10; www.vinscannovell.es ; Carrer de Bonaire 17; 8am-1pm & 3-8pm Mon-Fri,
8.30am-2pm Sat) Locals fill their own bottles from huge, 18th-century vats at this delight-
fully old-school winery. Made of olive wood and held together by sturdy rings of oak,
these grand old barrels were a standard feature of cellars and mansions across much of
this part of the island.
DON'T MISS
THE FINAL CRUSH
Binissalem celebrates the fruits of its wine harvest in late September with lots of
grape-stomping fun and a big, ridiculously messy grape fight. Every year at the
Festes de la Verema , trucks rock up on a muddy field to disgorge tons of grapes,
much to the delight of more than 1000 locals and visitors, who proceed to throw,
jump and roll around in the grapey goodness. Anyone mad enough is welcome to
join them, but take care to shield your eyes from the acidic juice.
The town divides into grape crushers and those getting down and dirty in the
batalles(grape battles). Thefestais actually a weeklong bash of wine tastings,
concerts, readings and exhibitions. Besides grape fights, the highlight is a night-
timecorrefoc(fire run), with fire-breathing devils dashing through the streets and
firework displays. The full program is published nearer the time at
www.ajbinissalem.net .
