WALKING TRAILS ALONG CAP DE FORMENTOR
The peninsula has various trails that lead down to pebbly beaches and inlets. The
walk from Port de Pollença to crescent-shaped Cala Bóquer is signposted off a
roundabout on the main road to Cap de Formentor. This valley walk, with the rocky
Serra del Cavall Bernat walling off the western flank, is an easy 3km hike.
About 11km along the peninsula from Port de Pollença, trails lead off left and
right from the road (there is some rough parking here) to Cala Figuera on the north
flank and Cala Murta on the south. The former walk is down a bare gully to a narrow
shingle beach, where the water's colours are mesmerising. The latter is through
mostly wooded land to a stony beach. Each takes about 40 minutes down.
Near Cala Murta is quiet Cala Gossalba , reached via a shady 30-minute walk (try
to park at the bay just before Km 15 and descend the trail opposite). From here you
can head right to traverse cliffs to the next cove. This is the trailhead for Forment-
or's most memorable hike. Ascend the boulder-speckled gully behind the cove and
then follow the serpentine old military path up to the summit of 334m Fumat
(around 1½ hours from the cove). The crag has knockout 360-degree views of the
cape to the east and the Badia de Pollença to the south, with the peaks of the Tra-
muntana rising like shark fins to the west. From here, retrace your steps and veer
left onto a trail that leads back to the road and the parking bay.
A couple of other small inlets to check out along the coast are Cala des Caló and
Cala En Feliu . Walkers can also hike to or from the cape along the Camí Vell del Far,
a poorly defined track that crisscrosses and at times follows the main road. At Port
de Pollença you can link with the GR221 trail that runs the length of the Serra de
Tramuntana.
The Pollença and Port de Pollença tourist offices can give you booklets that con-
tain approximate trail maps, which for these walks should be sufficient.
CAP DE FORMENTOR
The most dramatic stretch of Mallorca's coast (no mean feat!), Cap de Formentor is an
otherworldly domain of razor-edge cliffs and wind-buckled limestone peaks jutting far
out to sea; from a distance, it looks like an epic line of waves about to break.
