In-Depth Information
About 2km southwest from Portals Nous' elite yacht harbour and much-flaunted €500
notes is a whole other world. Palmanova and Magaluf have merged to form what is the
epitome of the sea, sand, sangria and shagging (not necessarily in that order) holiday that
has lent all of Mallorca an undeserved notoriety. The good news? Change is afoot, with a
planned multimillion-euro investment and an impending public drinking ban that is set to
change the face of this bad-boy resort.
DON'T MISS
MALLORCA ROCKS
For clubbers and concert-goers, one of the most exciting additions to the party
scene in Magaluf (or Palma for that matter) is Mallorca Rocks ( ++44 (0)207 9522
919; www.mallorcarocks.com ; Carrer Blanc 8, Magaluf) , the younger sister of the le-
gendary venue in Ibiza. Opened in 2010, the complex comprises a monster-sized
hotel (656 rooms) gathered around pools with pulsating music. The vibe? Fun but
not lairy. Sleep? Way overrated.
The two big weekly sessions are Tuesday's gigs and Thursday's W.A.R!, where
the crème of Europe's DJs spin techno, electro and house. Dizzee Rascal played in
2013, and the 2014 opening line-up is set to star Californian dudettes Haim and
British rock/indie band The 1975. Guests get entry to all events, while nonguests
can book tickets online (around €40 for gigs).
Sights & Activities
There is a reason for Palmanova and Magaluf's popularity: the four main beaches
between Palmanova and Magaluf are beautiful and immaculately maintained. The broad
sweeps of fine white sand, in parts shaded by strategically planted pines and palms, are
undeniably tempting and the development behind them could be considerably worse.
Marineland AMUSEMENT PARK
( 971 67 51 25; www.marineland.es ; Carrer Garcilaso de la Vega, Costa d'En Blanes; adult/child
€24/16.50; 9.30am-5.30pm late Mar-Oct) Flipper and Co perform playfully for cheering
crowds at 11.45am and 3.45pm daily at this marine-themed amusement park. Other big-
hitters include the sharks in the aquarium, the monkeys in the tropical house, the penguin
pools and the sea lion show (11.30am and 3.30pm daily). It's at the Puerto Portals round-
about near Portals Nous.
