Most of Palma's defensive walls were destroyed in the early 20th century to allow easier
expansion of the city. Only a section of the Renaissance sea wall, the Dalt Murada (be-
gun in 1562, finished in 1801), remains impressively intact. In 1984, Parc de la Mar
(with its artificial lake, fountain and green spaces) was opened. Head slightly east and
you'll reach a children's playground.
The park is an appealing place for a breezy drink at a terrace cafe in summer. It is also
the best vantage point for photographing the cathedral in all its colossal glory, especially
when it is lit up after dark.

( www.museo-santmarti.es ; Carrer de la Portella 9; adult/child €9/5; 9.30am-8.30pm Apr-Oct,
shorter hours rest of year) A grand town mansion set around an inner courtyard was re-
vamped and reopened as this museum in 2012. A dream come true for German art dealer
Wolfgang Hörnke, the museum is an ode to the wonderfully weird world of Catalan sur-
realist artist Salvador Dalí (1904-89). Some 226 original works from the 1930s to the
1970s are displayed on three levels.
Sorcery, bullfighting (with the matador often given a monstrous touch) and mythology
are recurring themes in the works that grace the opulent wood-floored rooms. Among the
standouts are series of lively engravings, including Faust (1968) and Les Hippies
(1969-70).

(Carrer de Sant Pere Nolasc 6; 9am-3pm Mon-Fri) Adjoining the Palau Episcopal is
the Jardí del Bisbe; this modest botanic garden is an oasis of peace. Have a quiet stroll
among the palms, pomegranates, water lilies, thyme, artichokes, kumquats, orange and
lemon trees, and more. Or just sit on a bench and contemplate.
