Blade Runner , 1982, written by Philip K. Dick, directed by Ridley Scott. Genetically engineered
organic robots, called replicants, visually indistinguishable from adult humans - 'more human
than human' - are manufactured by the Tyrell Corporation. Their use on Earth is banned, and
replicants are exclusively used for dangerous or menial work on Earth's off-world colonies.
Replicants who defy the ban and return to Earth are hunted down and 'retired' by police special
operatives known as 'blade runners'. The blade runners drive 'spinners', or flying cars, which
can be driven as ground-based vehicles, or in vertical take-off mode, hover, and cruise using jet
propulsion. Despite restrictions, wealthy people can also acquire spinner licenses.
Deckard : She's a replicant, isn't she?
Tyrell : I'm impressed. How many questions does it usually take to spot them?
Deckard : I don't get it, Tyrell.
Tyrell : How many questions?
Deckard : Twenty, thirty, cross-referenced.
Tyrell : It took more than a hundred for Rachael, didn't it?
