In a future where the masses are hedonistic, anti-intellectual and critical
thought through reading is outlawed, Guy Montag is employed as a 'fireman'
(which, in the future, means 'bookburner'). Anyone caught reading or
possessing illegal topics is confined to a mental hospital while the topics are
burned - at Fahrenheit 451 - by the firemen: 'time has fallen asleep in the
afternoon sunshine'.
