time between Jinan and Beijing reducing to just 1.5 hours from up to 7 hours previously,
while the trip between Jinan and Shanghai is now 3.5 hours, down from as much as 15 hours.
The rail line also enhances the transport links and cuts the journey time between Jinan and
Hebei, and Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. The (proposed) metro in Jinan will have a major
interchange with Jinan West railway station, hence providing a link between high-speed rail
and the metro to the city centre.
There is considerable potential for Jinan to develop as an axial city, as the HSR station is
located in the Western New District. High-density mixed-use development can be concentrated
around the new HSR station, as this provides the most accessible public transport location in
the city. The centre of gravity within Jinan moves to the west, but this will be compensated
for by the new metro link to the existing city centre. This local axis will be matched by a
regional axis to the east, as Jinan is linked by another HSR link to the port city of Qingdao
(population of 2.75 million) some 200 km away, with intermediate stops at Zibo (2.79 million)
and Qingzhou (1.35 million), giving a total regional population of over 20 million in the
corridor.
