Start at the excellent Suzhou Museum before quietly exploring Suzhou's gar-
dens, including the Garden of the Master of the Nets and the Humble Ad-
ministrator's Garden. Suzhou's fascinating crop of temples includes the
North Temple Pagoda and the West Garden Temple . Further historical
charm can be explored on evening boat tours in the outer canal.

Shanghai's most grandiose sight is the Bund , which faces skyscraper-encrus-
ted Lujiazui in Pudong over the Huangpu River. You'll want to stroll along East
Nanjing Road all the way to People's Square and the standout Shanghai Mu-
seum . The French Concession is the place for boutique shopping, dining,
drinking and slow ambling past European architecture along leafy side streets,
as well as the shikumen (stone-gate) architecture of Xintiandi and Tianzifang
. Save Pudong until last and visit the observation decks of the Shanghai
World Financial Center for evening views of Shanghai before dinner and
drinks on the Bund .
