Mandarin
In this section we've provided Pinyin (the official system of writing Mandarin in
the Roman alphabet) next to the Mandarin script. The tones are indicated by
accent marks on vowels: high (a), rising (a), falling-rising (a) and falling (a).
Keep in mind that 'u' is pronounced like 'ee' with pursed lips; 'c' as the 'ts' in
'bits'; 'q' as the 'ch' in 'cheese'; 'x' as the 'sh' in 'ship'; 'z' as the 'ds' in 'suds';
and 'zh' as the 'j' in 'judge'.
