China may be vast, but with two-thirds of the land either mountain, desert or
uncultivable, the remaining third is overwhelmed by the people of the world's
most populous nation. For social, economic and political reasons, China is ex-
periencing its - and the world's - most rapid period of urbanisation in history.
All this means the city can impinge in inescapable fashion. For the first time in
its history, China's city dwellers began to outnumber rural residents in 2011,
