Quanzhou. The descendants of these groups - now scattered across the
country - gradually integrated into Han culture, and are today distinguished
primarily by their religion. In Chinese, they are referred to as the Hui.
Other Muslim groups include the Uighurs, Kazaks, Kyrgyz, Tajiks and
Uzbeks, who live principally in the border areas of the northwest. It is estim-
ated that 1.5% to 3% of Chinese today are Muslim.
