Ideas have always possessed a certain volatility in China. The
Taiping Rebellion (1850-64) fused Christianity with revolutionary
principles of social organisation, leaving 20 million dead in its
bloody 20-year spasm. Communism itself is - or was - an ideology
that briefly assumed immense authority over the minds of China's
citizens. Today's Chinese may be more down-to-earth and prag-
matic, but they are increasingly returning to religion after decades
of state-orchestrated atheism.
