China is custodian of one of the world's richest cultural and artist-
ic legacies. Until the 20th century, China's arts were deeply con-
servative and resistant to change, but in the last hundred years re-
volutions in technique and content have fashioned a dramatic
transformation. Despite this evolution, China's arts - whatever the
period - remain united by a common aesthetic that taps into the
very soul and essence of the nation.
