Despite being the world's most populous nation - stamping ground
of roughly one-fifth of humanity - China is often regarded as ho-
mogenous. This is perhaps because the Han Chinese - the predom-
inant ethnic type in this energetic and bustling nation - constitute
over 90% of the population. But as with China's mystifying lin-
guistic babel, you only have to pop your travelling shoes on to dis-
cover a vibrant mix of diverse ethnicities.
