vast, excellent museum houses rotating exhibits as well as permanent collec-
tions of works by established Chinese and Western artists such as George
Chinnery (1774-1852), who spent most of his adult life in Macau painting.

Ma Temple is dedicated to A-Ma (better known as Tin Hau, the goddess of the
sea), from which the name Macau is derived.

PENHA HILL
( Colina da Penha; Click here 6, 9) The views here are excellent, as are
buildings such as Bishop's Palace, the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha (Capela
de Nostra senora da Penha) and modernist villas.

Northern Macau Peninsula
The northern peninsula is quite a good area to just wander around in.
GUIA FORT

( Fortaleza de Guia; 9am-5.30pm; 2, 17) As the highest point on the Ma-
cau Peninsula, this fort affords panoramic views of the city and, on a clear day,
across to the islands and China. At the top you'll find a lighthouse , built in
1865 and the oldest on the China coast, and the lovely Chapel of Our Lady

10am-5pm Tue-Sun) , built in 1622 and retaining almost 100% of its original
features, including one of the most valuable mural paintings in East Asia. Walk
