Opened in 1916 by a governor's wife, as a club for
single European women for whom the colony had little to offer by way of re-
spectable pastimes like tea parties and ballet lessons, HM is now a private
club and a hostel with 43 smallish but decent rooms. Those in the main build-
ing are women-only with shared bathrooms, while the studio flats in an adja-
cent building welcome both genders. You have to be 18 or above to stay here.
