In-Depth Information
ing yourself on the charming, carless island of Gulang Yu is the way to go;
you'll need to have some accommodation prebooked and hop on a ferry with
your suitcases to check in. Gulang Yu is worth careful exploration and is tailor-
made for slow and lazy appreciation. You may find there is little reason to
leave the island - except perhaps for a visit to the Nanputuo Temple - until it's
time for an excursion to the Fujian tulou (roundhouses) of (4) Yongding and
Nanjing. These colossal - usually round but sometimes oval or rectangular -
earth buildings are essentially fortified villages for the (usually Hakka Chinese)
families who dwell in them. Do spend the night in one if you have time - it's
easy to find a room and it's a unique and unforgettable experience.
