EAST NANJING RD
Once known as Nanking Rd, East Nanjing Rd ( ) was where the first depart-
ment stores in China were opened in the 1920s, and where the modern era -
with its new products and the promise of a radically different lifestyle - was
ushered in. A glowing forest of neon at night, it's no longer the cream of
Shanghai shopping, but it's still one of the most famous and crowded streets in
China. Guard against English-speaking Chinese women and students shang-
haiing you towards extortionately priced 'tea ceremonies'.
