Shanghai to Hangzhou
Water Towns & West Lake
After you have seen the sights in swinging
(1) Shanghai,
jump on a bus to the
nearby picturesque canal town of
(2) Zhujiajiao
for a day trip. Wander through
the village's charming streets, popping into temples and churches, crossing
humpbacked bridges that vault the waters and snacking as you go. If you
want, spend the night in Zhujiajiao and continue by bus to the delightful water
town of
(3) Tongli
in Jiangsu province, or spend the night in Tongli. Explore
the old town, pop into Tongli's Chinese Sex Culture Museum, take a boat tour
along the canal and admire the Tuisi Garden and the Ming-dynasty Gengle
Tang. From Tongli it's a short bus journey to
(4) Suzhou
for a day's exploration
of the top sights, including the eye-catching Suzhou Museum, the Garden of
the Master of the Nets, the Humble Administrator's Garden, the town's canal
views and temple vistas.
(5) Hangzhou
is another short hop away by high-
speed train and constitutes a delightful terminus, with several days of unhur-
ried sightseeing opportunities around the good-looking West Lake and bey-
ond, and the option to return to Shanghai by either bus or train.
