There are three routes up the mountain to its highest peak, 1532m above sea
level, that can be followed on foot: the central route (historically the Emper-
or's Route ( Yu Dao), winding 7.5km from base to summit, gaining 1400m of
elevation; the western route , which follows the bus route; and the less trav-
elled Tianzhu Peak route trail up the back of the mountain.
The central and western routes converge at the halfway point (Midway Gate
to Heaven), from where it's another 3.5km up steep steps to the summit.
