In-Depth Information
Sacred mountains are a dime a dozen in China, but in the end the one that
matters most is Tai Shan (admission ¥127 Feb-Nov, ¥102 Dec-Jan) . It is said
if you climb this Taoist mountain, you'll live to 100.
Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor, chose Tai Shan's summit to proclaim the
unified kingdom of China in 219 BC. Seventy-one other emperors and count-
less figures including Du Fu and Mao Zedong have also left their marks on the
mountain.
Autumn, when humidity is low, is the best time to visit; while early October
onwards has the clearest weather. In winter temperatures dip below freezing
and most summit hotels have no hot water.
