Much of Datong's old town ( l aochengqu ) has been levelled to restore what
was there before. Illogical for sure, but this is China. The renovations were on-
going at the time of writing, with Red Flag Sq completely inaccessible and the
area around the Drum Tower ( Gu Lou) re-emerging as a twee 'Ye Olde Qing
Quarter'.

HUAYAN TEMPLE
( Huayan Si; Huayan Jie; admission ¥80; 8am-6.30pm) This temple is di-
vided into two separate complexes, one of which is an active monastery (up-
per temple), while the other is a museum (lower temple). Built by the Khitan
during the Liao dynasty (AD 907-1125), the temple faces east, not south (it's
said the Khitan were sun worshippers).
