Part of Pingyao's charm lies in its peeling and weatherbeaten shopfronts, yet
to be mercilessly restored. Nan Dajie is stuffed with wood-panelled shops
selling ginger sweets (marvel at vendors pulling the golden sugary ginger
mass into strips), moon cakes, Pingyao snacks, knick-knacks, Cultural Revolu-
tion memorabilia, jade, shoes, slippers and loads more.

City Walls
If you like the city walls of Pingyao and Xi'an ( Click here ), north China has other
towns ringed by ramparts. Their survival usually signifies further historical remains.
1 ZHENGDING
Walled Zhengding has an outstanding collection of temples, including
Longxing Temple which houses an astonishing bronze colossus of Guanyin.
From Shijiazhuang, buses 131 and 132 (¥2, 45 minutes, 6.30am to 6.30pm)
run regularly to Zhengding's bus station from the main bus stop in the train
station square; D class trains run from Beijing West to Shijiazhuang.
2 KAIFENG
Once the prosperous capital of the Northern Song, the walled town of
Kaifeng has an alluring crop of temples and pagodas. West of Zhengzhou,
Kaifeng is on the railway line between Xi'an and Shanghai, with several D
class train passing through.
