Sacred Mountains
If you like the Taoist peak of Hua Shan ( Click here ) ,
north China frequently crumples into spectacular mountain ranges. Many, but by no
means all, have been requisitioned by Taoists and Buddhists who have left their
slopes littered with temples and myth.
1 WUDANG SHAN
Birthplace of the 'soft' martial art of taichi, Wudang Shan is deeply vener-
ated by Taoist monks and nuns who make a continuous pilgrimage to its
slopes. Located in northwest Hubei province; the nearest train station is
Wudang Shan.
2 HENG SHAN
Heng Shan is the northernmost peak of Taoism's five holy mountains, the
cliff-clinging Hanging Monastery its most celebrated highlight. Southeast of
Datong; see the Worth a Detour box for reaching the Hanging Monastery
3 SONG SHAN
Song Shan is best know for the Buddhist Shaolin Temple ( Click here ) , al-
though the mountain is itself - paradoxically perhaps - the central peak of
China's five Taoist mountains. Located southeast of Luoyang; all buses
from Luoyang to the Shaoĺin Temple reach Song Shan.
