Xi'an to Luoyang Terracotta Warriors, Warrior

Spend two days exploring the diverse sights of the Shaanxi capital (1) Xi'an ,
including the outstanding Terracotta Warriors, the Ming city walls, the city's
rare collection of Tang-dynasty pagodas, its atmospheric Muslim Quarter, fas-
cinating museums and the excellent choice of restaurants. Ensure you sample
the scrumptious local Muslim cuisine. If you have more time on your hands
and an adventurous streak, consider journeying east to the further-flung Taoist
mountain of Hua Shan (where you can spend the night) or an exploration of
the scattered imperial tombs and temples around Xi'an. Then jump aboard an
express train to (2) Luoyang to spend the night and visit the old town and the
astonishing Longmen Caves, one of China's most significant collections of
Buddhist statuary, outside town. The White Horse Temple, also outside town,
is China's oldest Buddhist temple. A short detour by bus to the legendary birth-
place of gongfu (kung fu), the Shaolin Temple, is also recommended for any-
one with either an interest in Buddhism or the magnificence of China's wushu
(martial arts). Visiting the Shaolin Temple is also an opportunity to explore the
