Wonder at the Yungang Caves
The ancient Buddhist statuary at Yungang ( Click here ) is one of China's three
great collections of grotto artwork. Despite the effects of pollution and weather-
ing, the statues retain a striking amount of pigment. The eagle-eyed can track
down graffiti from the Cultural Revolution and contributions from other eras.
The vast seated Buddha in Cave 20 may be the drawcard, but the entire
galaxy of effigies is magnificent.
