Beijing to Chuandixia City to Country
Tour
Begin your journey in similar fashion to the Highlights Tour in (1) Beijing , but
put aside a bit of extra time for sightseeing around town so you can fully ex-
plore other sights, including the displays at the Poly Art Museum and Capital
Museum and perhaps detour to the 798 Art District to get a handle on modern
Chinese art. Earmark the (2) Great Wall for a day's exploration and consider
hiring a taxi for a looping tour of its main areas as well as some of the lesser-
known, more authentic chunks.
Take a train or a bus from Beijing to (3) Chengde for its imperial heritage
and collection of Buddhist temples. It's worth spending the night in Chengde to
fully savour the scenery and have time to properly explore the imperial resort
of Bishu Shanzhuang.
The standout temples, including Puning Temple, which is home to a simply
awesome statue of Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Compassion, also need
to be seen. Return to Beijing and catch a bus or take a taxi to (4) Chuandixia,
the ancient village in the distant southwest of the municipality. There are sev-
eral homesteads where you can spend the night, introducing you to the bucolic
charms of China's rural side.
