9.2 Tasks and Activities
Tasks and activities in the implementation phase are associated with certain de-
liverables. The tasks and activities actually performed depend on the nature of the
project. A few sample tasks taken from a project of applabs (A large software
testing corporation) is provided below (Applabs 2006 ):
• Follow the naming and coding standards for developing the source code
• Follow the implementation plans/programming specifications
• Conduct peer reviews of software source code of each unit
• Place the software source code under software configuration management
• Execute all unit test cases mentioned in the Unit Test plan
• Document and track problems identified during unit testing to closure
• Review and close reported defects
• Perform software regression testing at unit test level when software source code
is changed
• Change software source code when software designs are changed
• Update the Project Data Collection Sheet.
9.2.1 Implementation Updates
The implementation notice should be sent to all users and organizations affected
by the implementation. Additionally, it is good policy to make internal organi-
zations not directly affected by the implementation aware of the schedule so that
allowances can be made for a disruption in the normal activities of that section.
Some notification methods are email, internal memo to heads of departments, and
voice tree messages. The notice should include:
• The schedule of the implementation;
• A brief synopsis of the benefits of the new system;
• The difference between the old and new system;
• Responsibilities of end user affected by the implementation during this phase;
and
• The process to obtain system support, including contact names and phone
numbers.
The Implementation Plan describes how the information system will be
deployed, installed and transitioned into an operational system. The plan contains
an overview of the system, a brief description of the major tasks involved in the
implementation, the overall resources needed to support the implementation effort
(such as hardware, software, facilities, materials, and personnel) and any site-
specific implementation requirements. The plan is developed during the Design
Phase and is updated during the Development phase; the final version is provided
