7.1 Categories of System Design
There are two broad approaches called structure-oriented design and object-
oriented design. Detailed categories include:
• Global-based systems
• Group-based systems
• Local-based systems
7.1.1 Global-Based Systems
Global-based design refers to complete overhaul or replacement of all the systems
design components. The following changes are common in this design (Burch
1992 ):
• Old output formats are changed to new output display devices
• New processes are developed
• Input to systems is through improved techniques rather than erroneous ones.
• Old hierarchical database is converted to relational database
• Various control are installed
• New platforms are used
To develop a global-based systems design, several alternatives are presented.
Once they are thoroughly reviewed by systems professionals, it is moved to the
evaluation phase.
7.1.2 Group-Based Systems
The group based system, though connected to global-based system, services a
branch, department or a special group of users in the enterprise. These groups will
