To access Parental Controls, open the Control Panel, choose User Accounts And Family
Safety, and click Parental Controls (see Figure 9.6). (Not all versions of Windows have the
Family Safety designation; if yours doesn't, choose User Accounts.)

On a Mac, the parental controls are found under System Preferences (see Figure 9.7).
You can do the following:
Set controls on how children browse the fi lesystem
Control which applications they can or can't use
Control administration rights to printers
Control whether children can change the dock (the lower graphical menu bar)
Restrict children's ability to burn CDs/DVDs
Restrict website access
Restrict profanity (rude words) in the dictionary
Limit email and chat to specifi c users and email addresses, with an additional option
for the child to request approval to connect to a new email address (this can be sent to
a parental email)
Set time limits, based on the number of hours/minutes, with variations for weekdays
and weekends
Invoke a bedtime rule
Show the activity of the child and what they have been doing
